Dr. Jack Berger '14

Dr. Jack Berger grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, where the impact of local health systems inspired him to pursue a career in healthcare. Jack attended Princeton University for his undergraduate studies. He graduated Cum Laude with an AB degree in Economics, developing a passion for behavioral economics and healthcare systems and operations along the way. At Princeton, Jack was a member of Cottage Club and the Varsity Student Athlete Advisory Committee. He competed as a member of Princeton's NCAA Division I Ice Hockey team, which he captained his junior and senior seasons. Upon graduation, he spent one year playing ice hockey professionally in Sweden while applying to medical school. He earned his MD degree from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Alongside his clinical training, he continued to pursue opportunities to develop skills and perspectives in healthcare delivery, process improvement, and organizational decision making. Most notably, he worked as a full-time healthcare consultant for Boston Consulting Group on a two-year leave of absence between his third and fourth years of training. Jack is currently in a four-year residency program in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania Health System. He serves as the department's Chief Resident of Quality Improvement and Patient Safety, and is a member of the interdepartmental Healthcare Leadership in Quality track. He remains active in the Princeton alumni community and serves on the ice hockey team’s advisory board. He firmly believes in the Athletic Department’s mission of “education through athletics” and advocates for non-traditional paths through medical training. He returns to campus with regularity and enjoys mentoring, particularly those pursuing healthcare careers and student-athletes.
