Career Transition Advising

Who is eligible for alumni advising

Undergraduate and graduate alumni who graduated within the last year may schedule career advising appointments. We also offer pre-law career advising appointments for alumni applying to the current cycle for law school.

Eligible alumni can schedule 45-minute virtual advising appointments to:

  • Identify their skills, strengths, values and interests
  • Develop a graduate study or law school application plan
  • Research and discuss possible career options
  • Create and/or assess their job search strategy and set goals
  • Review their CV, resume and/or cover letter
  • Identify contacts and resources to assist with their job search
  • Practice interview skills

Alumni career advising is a brief transitional support. Appointments will provide a framework for your transition and next steps to follow independently. It won’t usually be possible to communicate or meet with a career adviser before each interview or offer.

If you have any questions, please email [email protected].

All alumni are welcome to access online tools and resources

How to schedule

You can schedule an appointment using the Handshake online career management system. If you do not remember your login credentials, you can find instructions on Handshake's site to access your account.

Please note that demand for alumni career advising appointments is high. The next available appointment may not be for up to four weeks from the time you request an appointment.

How to prepare for appointments

To make the most of your appointment:

  • Clearly describe your situation when you make your appointment in Handshake when you schedule your appointment so the career adviser is familiar with your situation
  • Write down your main questions and any items that are you find most confusing or pressing
  • Have all documents, drafts, or sample position descriptions that interest you ready so you can easily share them with your career adviser at the beginning of your appointment (you can email the adviser these documents in advance, but they are unlikely to be able to view them before your appointment)
  • Consider doing research in advance or consulting some basic resources before your appointment to help you prioritize topics to use your time effectively
